On October 17 at 9:30 PM, psych-surf rock band Kioea from Maine is set to light up ShapeShifter Lab with their special blend of audio and visuals in an immersive live performance called “Echolocation.”
Guitarist Carand Burnet leads Kioea (pronounced kēōˈāə). With captivating guitar riffs and backed by the dynamic duo of Neil Collins on bass and Matt Wilson on drums, this trio creates a blend of surf rock, psychedelia, and world influences. Their innovative artistry has caught the eye of music reviewers, like J. Swartwood from Aquarium Drunkard, who praises Burnet’s merging of “simultaneously modern and vintage” sounds. Twice featured as a “New & Notable” on Bandcamp, Burnet’s music is described as a cinematic listening experience. Their most recent EP, Electric Surf, was released in June.

The night will also showcase a film featuring over 300 stunning 35mm landscape photos captured during an epic 10,000-mile road trip. Together, the music and visuals will take listeners on a captivating journey through the connections between nature and instrumental sound. Kioea’s band name derives from an extinct Hawaiian songbird. It symbolizes strength and translates to mean “Stand Tall.” Lead guitarist Carand Burnet adds, “Stand Tall is a mantra that empowers me as a female musician, and I hope this music inspires others.”

ShapeShifter Lab, located at 837 Union Street in Park Slope, Brooklyn, is a performance space that opened in 2011 and was initially located in Gowanus. The venue hosts some of the world’s most innovative artists who seek a flexible platform to present their work.
